Orthotics Q & A

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are customized medical shoe inserts designed to correct foot and ankle problems. They’re designed to address two common and related causes of foot pain: a lack of support from footwear; and structural foot problems, which unsupportive footwear often further worsens. When you wear custom-made orthotics from Local Foot Doc, they’ll gently move the structures in your foot, made up of muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones, into the correct place. The parts of your feet will be able to work together as they should, thereby relieving your pain.

The word “orthotics” may make you think of gel insoles you can buy at the pharmacy to provide “arch support.” Though these insoles can make your shoes more comfortable and provide more pain relief, they’re designed so just about anyone can use them.

Custom orthotics not only make your shoes more comfortable but are designed specifically to fit your feet. They actually correct your foot problems rather than reducing some of the resulting discomfort. They can even prevent new foot problems from forming.

What conditions are orthotics recommended for?

Custom orthotics help relieve foot pain and correct structural problems resulting from a variety of conditions. Dr. Majdanski and his team may recommend orthotics as part of your treatment for:

  • Arch pain
  • Arthritis
  • Bunions
  • Corns and calluses
  • Diabetes
  • Hammertoe
  • Plantar fasciitis

At an orthotics consultation, your doctor performs a comprehensive foot exam and goes over the benefits of orthotics for your condition.

How can orthotics help with my condition?

After getting your orthotics, you’ll immediately notice your shoes are more comfortable, not unlike if you buy over-the-counter insoles. But you’ll feel the real benefits of orthotics over time as your orthotics realign your feet, keeping your bones in place and relieving pressure on your tendons and ligaments. The materials in orthotics are firm enough to give you sturdy support but soft enough to feel comfortable.

Orthotics also prevent wear-and-tear and overuse injuries from developing, worsening, or recurring by cushioning your feet as they make contact with the ground. Your orthotics will guide your feet into making even contact with the ground so you don’t put excessive pressure on one part of your foot, a common cause of foot injuries.

How are orthotics made?

At Local Foot Doc, your doctor takes a 3D digital scan of your foot. They then order the orthotics from a lab, which designs them based on the scan and your doctor’s detailed notes about your condition. You then receive your orthotics a few weeks later.
